A home and auto insurance bundle is a good deal when the combined cost beats comparable separate policies and the coverage still fits your household. At Auto Insure News, that comparison starts with both premiums, the deductibles and the conditions attached to the discount, especially what happens if you later move just one policy.

How bundling home and auto works

Bundling means buying eligible policies through the same insurer or insurance program to qualify for a multi-policy discount. A typical home and car bundle still contains two contracts, each with its own coverage, limits, exclusions and renewal date.

The arrangement can make policy changes easier to coordinate. Depending on the company, you may have one account or agent for both. Billing and claims handling can still differ, particularly when an agency places the home policy with a partner insurer.

A multi-car discount is a different arrangement: it usually involves insuring more than one vehicle. A household can qualify for both multi-car and multi-policy discounts when the insurer’s rules allow it.

Homeownership can also qualify a driver for a separate auto discount without moving the property policy. That distinction matters when assessing car insurance savings after becoming a homeowner.

How much a bundle actually saves

The useful savings figure is the difference between two complete offers: the combined home and auto price, and the cost of comparable policies bought separately.

Add both premiums and fees

Request the final premium for each policy after applicable discounts, plus installment charges or other required fees. A cheaper car premium can be offset by a more expensive home policy.

Use the same time period. Doubling a six-month auto premium provides an annualized comparison with a yearly home premium; the next auto renewal can change. Also check monthly payments for down payments and installment fees.

When comparing quotes for car insurance, obtain the matching property quote before deciding that the auto discount makes the switch worthwhile.

Separate discounts from savings after switching

Published savings claims can measure different things. Progressive’s bundle page advertises an average 5% saving on auto in most states, based on a six-month term. It separately advertises average savings above 25% for new customers who saved by bundling.

The larger headline uses a survey of new customers who reported saving between June 2025 and May 2026. It describes a selected group’s savings after switching, rather than a guaranteed 25% discount on both of your premiums.

For any offer, identify which policy receives the discount and whether the comparison uses your current premium, an undiscounted quote or a customer survey. Those are different starting points.

Compare coverage before choosing a lower price

Use your current declarations pages as the starting point, then record any changes you want. The main types of auto insurance coverage need to line up across quotes, along with the home policy’s protection.

Coverage details to match in bundled and separate quotes
ItemWhat to compare
Auto liabilityBodily injury and property damage limits, plus any required underlying limits for an umbrella policy.
Other auto protectionComprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist and applicable medical coverages.
Auto deductiblesComprehensive and collision deductibles, along with any special glass provisions.
Home rebuilding coverageDwelling limit and any extended or guaranteed replacement cost provisions.
Belongings and roof claimsReplacement cost or depreciated-value settlement, roof restrictions and applicable endorsements.
Home deductiblesStandard deductible and any separate wind, hail or hurricane deductible, including percentage-based deductibles.
Additional protectionRelevant water backup, ordinance or law, rental car and roadside options; identify separately needed flood or earthquake insurance.

A lower premium obtained by increasing deductibles transfers more of a future repair bill to you. Record that change separately from the bundle discount.

Home rebuilding cost also differs from the property’s sale price. Keeping the dwelling limit appropriate for reconstruction is more useful than adjusting it simply to match a competitor’s cheaper quote.

When one event damages home and car

Each policy must cover its own loss

A falling tree or another event can damage the house and the car at the same time. The insurer still evaluates the home damage under the property contract and the vehicle damage under the auto contract.

The car needs coverage for that kind of loss. Adding a home policy does not add comprehensive coverage to a liability-only car policy. Keep the claim numbers and contacts for both parts of the loss, even when the same service team helps coordinate them.

A shared deductible needs specific terms

Bundling by itself does not eliminate the separate deductibles on covered home-property and auto physical-damage claims.

Progressive advertises a one-deductible benefit for a single event affecting both policies, but limits that benefit to home policies underwritten by Progressive Home, formerly ASI. It does not extend automatically to every property insurer in its network.

Before relying on a shared deductible, obtain the applicable terms: which policies qualify, which events trigger it and how the amount is calculated.

When separate insurers make more sense

Keeping policies separate is sensible when the combined standalone price is lower for the protection you need. It can also preserve a better policy for one part of the household.

A driver may need an insurer comfortable with a particular vehicle, driving record or use. The home may need different treatment because of its roof, construction, location or coverage requirements. One company may meet one need more successfully than the other.

For property in an area with limited insurance choices, replacing an acceptable home policy deserves particular care. Obtain an actual offer and review its conditions before scheduling cancellation.

Convenience has value, too. An agent who can coordinate household changes may be useful even when the price difference is small. The decision still needs both premiums and both contracts on the table.

Renters and condo owners can bundle too

A house purchase is not a prerequisite for a multi-policy discount. Eligible auto and renters combinations can provide a discount while the renters policy protects belongings and liability under its own terms.

A condo owner needs a unitowners policy suited to the association’s insurance arrangements. A standard homeowners quote is not an interchangeable substitute simply because both products can qualify for a discount.

Adding motorcycle, boat, life or umbrella insurance may create other eligible combinations. Buy those products for the protection they provide. Their entire cost belongs in the household comparison, even when adding them reduces the car premium.

How to switch your policies safely

You can explore a bundle with your existing auto insurer, your property insurer or another company. An existing customer may only need to add one qualifying policy.

  1. Gather the current contracts. Use declarations pages, renewal notices and the details of any endorsements you want to retain.
  2. Request bundled and separate offers. Use the same drivers, vehicles, property details, limits and deductibles.
  3. Confirm the conditions. Identify the insurer on each contract, any inspection or verification requirements and when the discount begins.
  4. Arrange the replacement coverage. Obtain confirmation of the policies and effective dates before authorizing cancellation of the old coverage.

Coordinate start dates before canceling

Check the actual effective dates and times. Receiving a quote or completing a request form is different from having coverage in force.

Home and auto renewals do not have to fall on the same day to investigate bundling. Ask how a midterm change would be handled, including any cancellation charge, unused-premium refund and the date the remaining policy receives its discount.

Send the old insurer the required cancellation request and retain its confirmation. Stopping an automatic payment alone can leave the cancellation unresolved.

Update mortgage and vehicle loan records

If the mortgage servicer pays home insurance from escrow, give it the replacement insurer’s details, policy information and effective date. Confirm where the next premium payment will go.

A refund from the old home insurer may need to return to escrow to fund the new payment. Ask the servicer how to handle it before treating the refund as spending money.

Financed or leased vehicles also need the correct lender or lessor information on the new auto policy. Send proof of coverage where required. Missing proof can lead a lender to purchase its own insurance and charge the borrower.

What changes when you cancel one policy

Get the revised premium for the policy you plan to keep before moving the other. State Farm, for example, explicitly warns that canceling one policy can remove the bundling discount.

The correct comparison is the new outside policy plus the remaining policy’s revised cost. Using its old discounted premium can make an otherwise expensive move appear cheaper.

Keep a record of which discounts remain. Homeownership, multi-car or other discounts may have different eligibility conditions from the multi-policy discount.

If you receive a policy cancellation or nonrenewal notice, review the stated reason, effective date and replacement options promptly.

When an insurer requires both policies

Ask whether the company will sell either policy on its own and what the price would be without the multi-policy discount. State law can restrict an insurer’s ability to make one purchase a condition of the other.

Texas addressed mandatory tying through SB 213, effective September 1, 2025. Its prohibition on mandatory home and auto bundling prevents covered insurers from making issuance or renewal of one policy contingent on purchasing the other from that insurer or an affiliate. The law contains exemptions, including personal umbrella policies.

Review the bundle at each renewal

A multi-policy discount can remain on the bill while the overall premium rises. The underlying price, coverage amounts, deductibles or other discounts may have changed.

Compare the new annual home premium with the auto renewal price, then obtain alternatives for the same protection. If renewals occur at different times, keep both dates on your calendar so an increase on one policy does not disappear inside the household total.

Updated mileage, drivers, payment arrangements and other eligible discounts offer other ways to lower car insurance costs when moving the home policy would be a poor fit.

Information to prepare for a bundle quote

A useful comparison starts with accurate household details and a clear coverage request. Have these ready:

  • Current home and auto declarations pages, premiums and renewal dates.
  • Driver details, vehicle identification numbers, garaging address, mileage and vehicle use.
  • Property address, construction details, roof information and relevant updates.
  • Requested limits, deductibles and optional coverages for both policies.
  • Relevant claims history and any mortgage, vehicle lender or lessor details.

Keep the resulting offers together with the insurer names, effective dates, final premiums and discount conditions. Those details make it possible to judge the bundle on the coverage and price you would actually buy.
