Need room for a family without paying for more SUV than you use? The choice between the Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Edge comes down to cabin space, fuel costs, and price. The Equinox has a smaller footprint; the Edge provides more cargo room and power. Auto Insure News compares the U.S. gasoline-powered 2025 Equinox with the 2024 Edge, including what changes when you shop used.
Chevrolet Equinox vs Ford Edge at a glance
Both seat five, but the Equinox is a compact SUV, and the Edge is a midsize SUV. These specifications apply to the model years shown, not every Equinox or Edge on the used market.
| Feature | 2025 Chevrolet Equinox | 2024 Ford Edge |
| Seats | 5 | 5 |
| Standard engine | 1.5L turbo four-cylinder, 175 hp | 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, 250 hp |
| Higher-output engine | No alternative engine | ST: 2.7L twin-turbo V6, 335 hp |
| Drivetrain | FWD or AWD | AWD on all trims |
| Transmission | FWD: CVT; AWD: 8-speed automatic | 2.0L: 8-speed automatic; ST: 7-speed automatic |
| EPA combined fuel economy | 27 MPG FWD; 26 MPG AWD | 23 MPG with 2.0L AWD |
| Cargo behind rear seats | 29.8 cu ft | 39.2 cu ft |
| Maximum towing | 800 lbs FWD; 1,500 lbs AWD | Up to 3,500 lbs with required equipment |
The practical choice: start with the Equinox if fuel spending and parking space matter most. Start with the Edge if you regularly carry bulky gear or need a properly equipped vehicle to tow more than 1,500 lbs. A used Edge’s price and condition can change; which one offers better value?
Price and trims: compare the vehicles you can actually buy
For historical price context, the 2025 Equinox LT launched at $29,995, including destination. A 2024 Edge SE’s base price of $38,465 plus a $1,495 destination charge came to $39,960 before options. These are entry-level new-vehicle price references, not current used-car offers. They also compare a front-wheel-drive Equinox with an all-wheel-drive Edge.
Ford ended production of the North American Edge after the 2024 model year. Buyers can consider used or certified pre-owned examples, as well as any unsold new stock a dealer still has. Do not assume every available Edge is a leftover new vehicle, or that discontinuation guarantees a discount.

Which Equinox trim is worth considering?
The LT is the starting point for buyers seeking a lower purchase price. RS adds sport-oriented styling; ACTIV adds a more rugged appearance and all-terrain tires. Both retain the same engine output. Choose between them based on their equipment and appearance, rather than expecting a performance upgrade.
Which Edge trim fits your needs?
SE, SEL, ST-Line, and Titanium use the four-cylinder engine. ST-Line has sportier styling; it does not have the ST’s V6. Titanium adds comfort and audio equipment, while the ST is the performance model. Optional packages matter as much as the trim name, especially for towing and advanced driver assistance.
When negotiating a used car price, compare the same year, trim, mileage, and condition with nearby cars. Request the out-the-door total, then account for any tires, brakes, or other work identified during the inspection. A lower advertised price can lose its appeal once those costs are added.
Size and cargo space: how much bigger is the Edge?
The Ford Edge is 5.6 inches longer and about 1 inch wider overall. Its advantage is more noticeable in cargo capacity than in rear legroom.
| Measurement | 2025 Equinox | 2024 Edge |
| Overall length | 183.2 in | 188.8 in |
| Body width, excluding mirrors | 74.9 in | 75.9 in |
| Overall height | 65.6 in | 68.3 in |
| Front legroom | 40.9 in | 42.6 in |
| Rear legroom | 39.9 in | 40.6 in |
| Cargo, rear seats upright | 29.8 cu ft | 39.2 cu ft |
| Cargo, rear seats folded | 63.5 cu ft | 73.4 cu ft |
For passengers and child seats
The Edge provides an extra 1.7 inches of front legroom and 0.7 inches of rear legroom. Neither figure tells you whether your child seat fits comfortably behind your driving position. Bring the seat to the test drive, check rear-facing clearance, and let the tallest passenger sit in the back. A sunroof can also affect headroom.
For luggage and parking
With the rear seats upright, the Edge has 9.4 cubic feet more cargo space. That can help when you need a stroller and luggage in the vehicle at the same time. Check the opening and floor shape with your largest item; a volume figure alone cannot confirm that it fits.
The Equinox’s shorter body gives it an advantage in a tight parking space. Measure your garage with shelves and other stored items in place, then allow room for the mirrors, doors, and liftgate. Do not use body width as the garage-door clearance measurement.

Engine performance, transmissions, and towing
The Edge’s power advantage is substantial on paper: its standard engine produces 75 more horsepower than the Equinox, and the ST adds a V6. That makes the Edge the stronger candidate if power is a priority. Test-drive both with your usual passengers before deciding how much extra performance you need.
The Equinox’s FWD and AWD versions have different transmissions, despite sharing the engine. A CVT varies its ratio without fixed gear changes; the AWD model uses an eight-speed automatic. Try both if transmission response is important to you.

Check the towing package before buying
The Equinox’s advertised 1,500-lb maximum applies to AWD; the FWD limit is 800 lbs. A four-cylinder Edge without the Class II Trailer Tow Package is listed at 1,500 lbs. The package increases its maximum to 3,500 lbs and is standard on the Edge ST.
Use the trailer’s loaded weight, including the boat, camper, or equipment, and everything carried in it. Also check tongue weight, payload, and the owner’s manual limits. A hitch receiver by itself does not prove that the vehicle has the higher factory towing rating. Ask for the original equipment list when shopping for used.
Fuel economy and a realistic fuel budget
The Equinox uses less fuel on the EPA combined cycle. The FWD comparison is not a four-MPG highway advantage, however: the Equinox FWD and four-cylinder Edge both rate at 28 highway MPG. For buyers who need AWD, compare the Equinox AWD row below.
| Vehicle | City MPG | Highway MPG | Combined MPG | Fuel cost/year* |
| 2025 Equinox FWD | 26 | 28 | 27 | $1,944 |
| 2025 Equinox AWD | 24 | 29 | 26 | $2,019 |
| 2024 Edge 2.0L AWD | 21 | 28 | 23 | $2,283 |
*Auto Insure News calculation: 15,000 miles per year ÷ EPA combined MPG × $3.50 per gallon. Totals are rounded to the nearest dollar. The mileage and fuel price are assumptions, not a prediction of your driving or local gas prices.
Using those assumptions, the Equinox FWD saves about $338 per year in fuel compared with the four-cylinder Edge, or approximately $1,691 over five years. Comparing AWD with AWD reduces the annual difference to about $263. Actual spending changes with speed, traffic, weather, loads, and fuel prices.
You can check the exact model and drivetrain using the government’s EPA fuel economy comparison tool. The Edge ST has a different engine and fuel rating, so the four-cylinder Edge figures should not be used for an ST budget.
Safety: what is standard and what needs a package?
The 2025 Equinox LT includes adaptive cruise control, blind-zone alert, and rear cross-traffic braking as standard, along with automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. These features do not require moving up to RS or ACTIV.
The Edge includes BLIS blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert as standard Co-Pilot360 equipment. Adaptive cruise control and Evasive Steering Assist are part of Co-Pilot360 Assist+ or the relevant equipment group; they are not standard features on the base SE.
For a used vehicle, confirm the installed features from its original window sticker or equipment record. Inspect the cameras and sensors, and ask whether calibration was completed after windshield or collision repairs. More assistance features do not, by themselves, establish that one SUV performs better in a crash.
Interior technology and comfort
The Equinox has an 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built in and a standard six-speaker audio system. Some connected services require an eligible service plan. The Edge uses a 12-inch SYNC 4A screen. Both support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Titanium and ST versions of the Edge offer the 12-speaker B&O system. Titanium uses ActiveX upholstery; the ST has leather-trimmed seating with Miko inserts. Camera and parking-assistance availability depend on the equipment group or package.
Check seat support, climate controls, phone connection, and visibility during the test drive. For a used example, operate the screen, liftgate, and every powered seat function. Equipment that looks attractive in an advertisement has less value if it needs an expensive repair.

Reliability and what to inspect when buying used
A reliability score spanning several model years cannot predict repair bills for a redesigned 2025 Equinox or a specific 2024 Edge. Avoid choosing solely from a model’s reputation. Service records, accident history, mileage and the inspection tell you more about the vehicle being offered.
Ask an independent mechanic to check for fluid leaks, warning codes, transmission problems, cooling-system faults, uneven tire wear, and evidence of collision repair. Check the VIN for open recalls and confirm whether the required work has been completed.
Water damage deserves separate attention. Learn how to check for flood damage on a car before treating a low asking price as a bargain. A vehicle-history report helps, but it does not replace a physical inspection.
Discontinuation alone does not establish that an Edge will be unreliable or impossible to service. Confirm local service options and any remaining warranty by VIN and original in-service date. A used 2024 vehicle does not receive a fresh factory warranty simply because you buy it now; CPO or other added coverage has separate terms.

Ownership costs: include insurance before deciding
Fuel is only one part of the budget. Compare the out-the-door purchase price, loan interest, insurance, scheduled maintenance, tires, repairs, and likely resale value. If a single vehicle is used, include any immediate work identified during the inspection. Build the comparison from the two vehicles’ actual prices and your quotes, then use the fuel estimate above for that part of the calculation.
Get quotes for both vehicles
Request insurance prices for the exact VINs, using the same drivers, address, liability limits, and deductibles. Our guide to how to get insurance quotes explains what to prepare for the comparison. Obtain both quotes before agreeing to the purchase.
Do not assume the smaller SUV will always be cheaper to insure. Vehicle details are only part of what determines your car insurance rate; your driving history, location, coverage, and insurer also matter. If you finance the vehicle, confirm the lender’s coverage requirements when requesting prices.
Which SUV should you buy?
Choose the Equinox when a smaller SUV meets your needs
- You want the lower combined fuel consumption and do not need the Edge’s engine output.
- Your parking space is tight, and your passengers and regular cargo fit comfortably.
- You find an example with the equipment, condition, and purchase price that suits your budget.
Choose the Edge when the extra room earns its cost
- You regularly carry bulky luggage or equipment with the rear seats occupied.
- You need more than 1,500 lbs of towing capacity, and you’ll need to find a vehicle with the required factory package.
- A used or CPO example passes inspection and compares favorably on purchase price, financing, and insurance.
Before you sign, compare written-out-the-door prices, check equipment and warranty records, and test the vehicle with the passengers or cargo you normally carry. Then confirm how to get car insurance before buying a car so the policy can take effect when you need it for delivery.
