A lower car insurance quote is worth checking before your next renewal. But is Allstate cheaper than GEICO? GEICO had the lower average price in the published rate example below, while Allstate may offer a better quote for your household. Auto Insure News looks at the costs, coverage differences, and details to check before you switch.

Is Allstate cheaper than GEICO?

Allstate was more expensive in the published comparison reviewed below. That gives you a reason to request a GEICO quote, but it does not settle the price for your car. Your address, driving history, coverage, and discounts can change which company costs less.

Source: Insurance.com’s published Allstate and GEICO comparison, accessed October 7, 2026. Full coverage benchmark: a 40-year-old driver, good credit, clean record, Honda Accord LX, 10,000 annual miles, 100/300/100 liability limits, and $500 collision and comprehensive deductibles. State minimum coverage varies by state.

Auto Insure News calculated a $1,057 annual difference between these full-coverage averages, which is about 33% of Allstate’s example premium. Monthly equivalents are annual totals divided by 12 and rounded; an actual payment plan may include a down payment or fees. These are published averages, not personal quotes.

For reference, 100/300/100 means $100,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $300,000 per accident, and $100,000 of property damage liability. Those limits matter: a low quote with less protection is a different purchase.

State minimum coverage costs less in this example, but it does not include collision or comprehensive protection for your own car. A loan or lease may require those coverages. Our liability vs full coverage guide explains the difference before you choose which price to compare.

Why your Allstate or GEICO quote may look different

A national average cannot account for the details of your household. Even two neighbors driving the same model can receive different prices because they have different records, mileage, or policy limits.

  • Location: Your garage address affects the risk of theft, crashes, weather-related claims, and other claims.
  • Vehicle: Repair costs, replacement value, and the exact model affect the price of physical damage coverage.
  • Drivers: Age, experience, accidents, and violations influence the quote.
  • Use: Annual mileage and whether the car is used for commuting, personal trips, or business matters.
  • Coverage: Higher limits, lower deductibles, and optional protection change the total.

Each insurer applies its own pricing rules. The same speeding ticket or vehicle can therefore affect two quotes differently. Understanding what determines your car insurance rate helps explain why a friend’s cheaper policy may not predict your result.

When Allstate may be the cheaper choice

Your home and auto bundle costs less overall

If you own a home, compare the combined bill. A larger auto discount can still leave you paying more if the homeowner’s premium rises enough to cancel the savings.

Both companies offer ways to combine policies. GEICO arranges homeowners insurance through agency partners, so ask which insurer would issue and service the home policy. The relevant comparison is the final price and protection for both your home and car.

Request an auto-only quote and a bundle quote from each company. Match the homeowners’ limits and deductibles as well as the car insurance terms. Also, ask what happens to the remaining policy’s discount if you later move one policy elsewhere.

Your final quote includes more useful discounts

Ask each insurer to price the discounts you actually qualify for. Depending on the company and state, these may relate to multiple vehicles, students, payment arrangements, vehicle equipment, or other eligibility rules.

A longer discount list does not tell you which policy is cheaper. Compare the final premium after discounts have been applied, and check whether any savings depend on enrolling in a driving app or on maintaining another policy.

You drive very little and qualify for a different pricing plan

Allstate’s Milewise pay-per-mile option combines a daily base charge with a charge for miles driven. The daily charge still applies on days the car stays parked. Where enrollment is available, request an estimate based on your normal annual mileage and compare it with a conventional policy.

Occasional use is a reason to ask about pricing, not a guarantee that Milewise or Allstate will be less expensive. Confirm current availability and the terms for your state.

Compare coverage and service before choosing the lower price

For a standard policy, start with liability, collision, and comprehensive. Then check the extras you need, such as rental reimbursement or roadside assistance. Two quotes described as “full coverage” can still have different limits, deductibles and exclusions.

Your situationWhat to check
You have a car loan or leaseRequired limits, physical damage coverage, and any need for GAP protection.
You want protection against mechanical failuresWhether your vehicle qualifies for GEICO’s MBI, plus its cost and exclusions.
You prefer help from a local agentLocal availability, who services the policy, and how claims are handled.
You depend on the car every dayRental reimbursement limits and how long a replacement vehicle is covered.

GAP protection for a financed car

GAP protection can help with an eligible shortfall between a covered total loss settlement and the balance owed on a loan or lease. GEICO does not offer GAP insurance. Allstate lists GAP among its coverage options, but you should confirm which product is available for your vehicle and state before relying on it.

If you need separate GAP protection, include its cost in the comparison. Check the loan or lease agreement for existing protection, and review exclusions and payment limits. A lower auto premium alone may not show the total cost of the protection you need.

Mechanical breakdown insurance has purchase restrictions

GEICO’s mechanical breakdown insurance, or MBI, covers eligible mechanical repairs subject to its terms. Buying it generally requires a vehicle under 15 months old with fewer than 15,000 miles; some states allow vehicles under 36 months old with fewer than 36,000 miles. Ownership requirements also vary.

An older car that has just run out of warranty does not automatically qualify for a new MBI purchase. A policy purchased earlier may be eligible for renewal, generally for up to 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with different age limits in some states. MBI excludes routine maintenance and wear and tear, and covered repairs carry a deductible.

Check how you would get help

Allstate has a local agent network. GEICO also has local agents, as well as online and phone service. Before buying, ask who would handle a policy change, explain a coverage question, or help you start a claim. Paying more does not by itself establish better service.

Drivewise vs DriveEasy: Can the apps change your rate?

Allstate’s Drivewise and GEICO’s DriveEasy use driving information to help determine pricing. Enrollment savings can make the first quote attractive, but you also need to understand what happens at renewal.

Both programs can lead to higher rates for riskier driving, depending on the state and program terms. Allstate’s current Drivewise information identifies New York as an exception to increases in driving-behavior rates. Avoid treating either program as a guaranteed discount.

Before enrolling, ask:

  • Which behaviors and trips affect the price?
  • Can the driving score increase the premium in your state?
  • Which household drivers must participate?
  • What happens to the discount if you stop participating?

Request a price with and without the program. If you are deciding whether car insurance trackers are worth it, weigh the quoted savings against the data collected and the potential effect on renewal.

Which is cheaper after a ticket, accident, or DUI?

Neither company is a reliable winner for every driver with a violation. The type of incident, its date, the state, and the requested coverage can change the result. A liability-only comparison may also produce a different winner than a full-coverage comparison.

Give both insurers the same incident details and request the same protection. If the price is unusually low, ask whether it is still subject to a driving-record check and whether the quote includes every driver who needs to be listed.

After a conviction, knowing how long a DUI stays on your insurance can help you decide when another comparison may be worthwhile. An old average cannot tell you the price after your own record has changed.

How to compare Allstate and GEICO quotes fairly

Use your current declarations page as a starting point. It lists the coverages, limits, and deductibles you already carry. You can request changes, but apply them to both quotes.

  1. Use the same household and vehicle details. Match drivers, VIN, garaging address, mileage, and use.
  2. Match the coverage. Include liability limits, collision and comprehensive deductibles, any required personal injury or uninsured motorist coverage, and the optional protection you want.
  3. Match the start date and policy term. Check whether each quote covers six months or a year. Doubling a six-month price gives an annual estimate, but the price may change at renewal.
  4. Get the total for the policy term. Include any installment or payment-plan fees. A small monthly payment may require a larger initial payment.
  5. Separate the discounts. Ask which depend on a bundle, a driving app, a payment method, or other continuing conditions.
  6. Confirm the price before buying. Check whether the quoted premium is subject to verification, and request the coverage details in writing.

The New York Department of Financial Services’ guide to purchasing auto insurance also recommends comparing coverage of the same type. Its legal requirements are specific to New York; check your own state’s requirements when choosing protection.

Should you switch from Allstate to GEICO?

Switching is worth considering when the verified GEICO quote costs less for the protection you want. Before deciding, account for any lost home or renters discount, separately purchased coverage, and cancellation charges under the existing policy.

If the difference is small, compare the service arrangements and policy terms that matter to you. If Allstate’s final quote is lower, the national averages are no reason to turn it down. Getting a third company’s quote can also show whether either offer is competitive.

Before canceling, confirm the new policy has taken effect and that any lender’s requirements have been met. Ask the existing insurer about cancellation procedures and any refund due for unused coverage.

Keep the quotes and review the price again when circumstances change, or a renewal arrives. Our guide to how often to shop for car insurance explains when another comparison can be useful.

How Auto Insure News checked this comparison

Auto Insure News reviewed published pricing and checked product information in October 2026. The rate table uses a single dataset rather than combining multiple sample profiles. We calculated the difference and monthly equivalents from its annual figures; we did not collect personal quotes for this article.

Product checks covered GEICO’s MBI, GAP, homeowners, and DriveEasy information, as well as Allstate’s Drivewise, Milewise, and GAP resources. Availability and eligibility require confirmation for the specific policy and state. The access date is not the date the underlying rates were collected.
